Originally from Vancouver B.C., Barb has lived all over British Columbia, finally settling in Courtenay on Vancouver Island. Barb's fascination with glass blossomed watching PBS documentaries of Dale Chihuly in the late 80s. Once she had the ability to have a space to work in, she took a stained glass course and started making pieces that were mostly given away. Over time as her expertise developed so did her interest in fused glass. Today Barb is semi retired, has a 'small but mighty' glass studio that she gets to spend far more time than she should experimenting with light, colour and fragile joy fused glass brings to her.

Each piece I make is a result of something that inspires my joy. Sometimes it’s colour, sometimes it’s music, sometimes it’s a mood or a wish or a fantasy but it’s always something that invokes an emotion in me. It is my hope that my fused glass art will touch the people that see it. Does it make you happy? Does it make you smile? Does it spark joy?
I like to see functional art, as you will notice from the pieces I make. Most often my art is shown in bowls and platters, things that are both useful and artful. It doesn't limit me to only functional pieces though, it's just a part of what I enjoy.

Warm glass, fused glass, kiln carving, a few names for the art and craft work of manipulating glass with heat. Unlike blown glass, warm glass starts as a sheet of glass that is cut and then heated to a liquid state which then is cooled into a new shape. This usually happens multiple times before you get to the final product. Chemical reaction, accessory glass, layers of glass and colour mixed together with heat, timing, and mold shape are all things to be considered when creating with glass.
